January is often called the ‘dark month’, and I think this applies to gardens and outside spaces in particular. It is a real effort to get out there and actually there is not much you can do in a garden at this time of year, when the ground is this saturated apart from pruning and cutting, but walking in a sodden garden risks soil compaction, creating future problems for you.
One thing you can do is look at your garden from inside and plan. Look through your windows; how do you feel when you look out?
If you are happy with what you see, that is great. Having a garden looking good in January is something most people aspire to. If you see a dull space that makes you sigh, don’t despair, here at Chopwell we have the knowledge and skills to bring colour into your garden all the months of the year.
Many gardens become almost 2 dimensional in the winter, plants cut back to ground level that look almost dead and nothing to look at apart from your boundaries above 1metre.
It can be different; winter is when evergreens, such as Box, Bay and Privet come into their own, providing green focal points in a grey landscape. There are also plants that flower through the winter, including viburnum species to provide points of colour in a dull view.
