Autumn (November onwards) is the best time of year to plant trees, and the only time you should ever plant a bare-rooted tree (i.e. one not purchased in a container). Trees have lost their leaves and are dormant; the soil is warm after the summer and damp from autumnal rain. The tree-planting season lasts until the end of March, when temperatures rise and soils dry out.
