Privet (ligustrum ovalifolium) comes in a green and a variegated form. It creates a dense evergreen hedge often used to mark boundaries.
Other options to consider for a taller evergreen hedge (over 1.5m) include Conifer (various species), laurel
If the hedge required is shorter, Box (buxus) is also evergreen, or deciduous options include Lavender.
Growing Conditions
Privet is a pretty tolerant plant and will cope with most soils and situations. It prefers full sun or partial shade. It can cope with exposed sites and can provide shelter for other more tender plants. It does not like to be in boggy soil.
Effort to Grow
This is an easy plant to grow, and will need pruning to shape at least annually. Some gardeners prefer to give their privet hedges trim twice a year.
