Know your plant names

Do you know your plant names?  Do you name a plant in Latin or in English?

Can you describe a plant, the type of leaves, the preferred growing conditions, common pests and diseases?

Are your plants called by the event or person who introduced you to them?

When you are out and about do you look at plants and wonder what they are and whether you could grow it in your garden?

Previously if you saw a plant you liked, you had to remember, then consult books.  Now technology comes to our aid with a number of apps available for smart phones and tablets to identify plants and flowers. All use the camera to record a picture to then identify.  There are versions for different geographies too, so when travelling you can still find out about that beautiful tree or flower.

If you want to impress with your plant knowledge, try searching on the site you buy your apps, using key words such as

  • plant identifier/ plant finder
  • tree finder
  • gardening

and you will get a range of apps, covering trees, flowers, fungi, and much more at a range of prices. Some work just on tablets others on phones and tablets.  Most can be downloaded for free with in-app purchasing options.

Our current favourite apps for the UK are

  • Garden answers
  • RHS grow your own (for fruit and veg)
  • Garden compass

All offer in-app purchases to improve functionality and information provided.  We think these apps are great to help you create a short list of possible plants for your garden.

However, every space is a unique combination of soil, light and micro climate so the perfect plant may not suit your space.   Here at Chopwell our friendly professional team are able to assess all the unique factors that make up your garden to provide personal tailored advice for planting, growing, trimming and maintaining your trees, shrubs and hedges.
