Climbing plant leaf

What’s that plant?

Out and about, do you see a plant and wish you knew what it was? Maybe its one you’d like for your garden but don’t know whether it is suitable. Until recently the only way to identify a plant was asking someone with knowledge or looking up the leaf or flower in a plant finder book.

Now technology comes to our aid with a number of apps available for smart phones and tablets to identify plants and flowers. There are versions for different geographies too, so when travelling you can still identify that beautiful tree or flower.

From the site you buy your apps search on ‘plant identification’ and you will get a range of apps, covering trees, flowers, fungi, and much more at a range of prices. Some work just on tablets others on phones and tablets.

If you are not sure, start with a free app such as

  • LeafsnappUK
  • Plantsnapp
  • FSC Trees Guide

None of these apps are perfect, Leafsnapp marred by games that seem to be full of bugs, Plantsnapp has annoying in app purchases and FSC Trees works best in portrait, and no back button

If you are prepared to pay an upfront fee, there is more choice, but we haven’t found a perfect app yet… we’ll keep looking

In the mean time, enjoy finding out more about trees and if you want personal tailored advice for your garden, give Chopwell a call. We can assess your space and requirements to recommend the best tree or shrub for your garden.
