Clients are asking what to do in their gardens. Everything is growing, yet they can not spend time in the garden due to the rain. Chopwell recommends
What to do about lawns?
When the grass is drier and it is not raining try to cut the grass. Keep the blades at a higher setting so if the mower sinks in a soft patch, it doesn’t remove all the grass. If possible mulch mow so the clippings are left to nourish the grass
What to do about weeds?
Weeds love this weather and are growing well. If your ground is too wet to dig, try to remove the weed flowers as they bloom to stop them broadcasting seeds and creating more weeds in the future. You can dig up and remove the plants at a later date. Mulch flower beds to cover the weeds and to help prevent soil and nutrients being washed away by the rain.
What to do about bulbs?
Hopefully you will have enjoyed the earlier spring bulbs such as snowdrops, crocus and daffodil. If you get the chance, remove the spent flower heads from daffodils so they concentrate their energy into the bulb for next years’ flower.
You may decide that some bulbs are in the wrong place or are getting too crowded, mark where they are and you can dig them up to move and divide clumps later on once the ground is drier.
What to do about plants in pots?
This may sound odd, but water your plants in pots. Although we are having lots of rain, it may not be enough for plants in pots. Make sure pots have free drainage, if they are standing in a saucer, remove the water from the saucer as most plants do not like having their roots saturated. This also applies to any seedlings you have in seed trays, keep them moist but not waterlogged.
