In the garden or the countryside we are always asking ‘what is it?’ Plant, birdsong, insect, butterfly; knowing what you are seeing and hearing enhances any experience.
There are many apps and tips to find out more, some are free to use; all can help you and your companions engage more fully in a walk time outdoors. Here are some of Chopwells favourites, many others are available.
What is it; plants?
We take a photo and click the info icon to get a plant name. Sometimes it can be a bit vague or give American common names, but matching similar images will find the plant. There are plant finder apps available too, some require subscription or personal details to get access. If we see a plant and are particularly interested in it, we will take a photo and do further research using sites like RHS plant finder. The RHS plant finder has really comprehensive information on size, shape, ease of growing and growing requirements.
What is it; Birdsong?
Like many people we enjoy the Merlin birdsong app. Where after registering you make recordings and it usually picks up the local birdsong. We say usually, as it doesn’t recognise local peacocks and ducks. It also is less good on fledgling birdsong. The main issue we have is getting it recording before the bird flies away!
What is it; Butterflies and moths
The Big Butterfly Count asks you to use their app to record butterflies and moths for data collection by the Butterfly conservation trust. If you want to see more exotic species, the Stratford butterfly farm is a great destination.
