Weed control

The recent weather has made weed control a priority in gardens.  The warmer weather has put plant growth into overdrive. It can feel that the weeds taking over, drowning out your precious seedlings and plants.

The ground has dried out, making weed control hard, so how can you stop the weeds taking over?

There is an old saying ‘one year’s seeds; seven years weeds’. This is particularly true for dandelions.  They can go from bud to seed within a sunny day and once the dandelion clocks are visible it is almost impossible to stop seeds scattering everywhere. Follow these weed control tips to help you keep your garden in control

  • Snap off any weed flower heads, particularly dandelions to stop them seeding and creating more of a problem in the future.
  • If weeds are already turning from flower to seed head, there is no time to lose put weeds in and seeds your green bin
  • For larger areas put down, and anchor, a layer of old carpet or carboard; anything that will literally stop plants growing and keep out the light.
  • If weeds are very close to your prized plants use a touch weeder on the leaves of the weed
  • Mow and strim regularly both to benefit your lawn and weed control within the grass
