Size
Witch Hazel or Hamamelis are a family of small trees or large shrubs that produce bright orange or yellow flowers in mid winter on bare stems.
Depending on variety, height and spread can be over 2m by 2m. Check the expected size when purchasing. There are smaller species that can be grown in pots.
Growing Conditions
Sunny open aspect out of the wind and away from frost pockets. Witch hazels can be damaged by frost.
Some Witch Hazel flowers have a strong perfume, try to plant where you will be able to appreciate it.
They need a free draining, moist soil and may struggle in areas of heavy clay (parts of Warwickshire).
They need an acid to neutral soil (not chalky).
Effort to Grow
If you have the right conditions a Witch Hazel will thrive. Keep well watered until established, including in the summer months, if it gets too dry in summer it may not flower in winter.
If grown in a container, make sure the roots have space to grown and that the compost never dries out.
A relatively easy plant to grow (Vibernum and Mahonia are easier).

What to look out for when planting and in the first 2 years
Keep well watered until established. If container planted keep well watered and ensure the plant is in a big enough pot. Ensure drainage holes in pot and stand pot on pot feet to encourage good drainage.
Witch Hazels are usually grafted onto root stock so beware of suckers close to ground level, remove when spotted.

Can be susceptible to Honey fungus and root rot. Leaves may get mildew and vine weevil can be an issue.
