Effort to Grow
We have given this hedge an easy growth rating, as it is relatively slow growing and initially fairly easy to manage. Prior to planting, propagate from semi-hardwood cuttings.
Why plant this hedge in your garden?
The Common Box hedge has small and glossy oval or oblong leaves with small yellowish flowers in the leaf axil. A perfect addition for the garden. Please note however, the Common Box is highly susceptible to box blight, so if you or your neighbours have a problem with box blight, we recommend you do not choose the Common Box as it is likely to also become infected. Alternatives for the Common Box hedge may include Yew, Privet, Lavender or Rosemary.
What to look out for when planting and in the first 2 years
Whilst the Common Box is in the early stages of growth, if it is exposed to excessive sunlight they can often be scorched. They can also be damaged from excessive wind.
What to look out for when the hedge is established (2 years or more after planting or if you inherit it)
Pests for the Common Box can include box sucker, mussel scale and box red spider mite. Whilst diseases that may also effect the hedge include leaf spot. Box blight is a major problem within the UK which makes it difficult to grow the Common Box.
