The impact of a summer storm on a tree can be far more damaging than a winter one. As the trees are in leaf they are far less aerodynamic, the leaves create a resistance to the wind, meaning the tree moves more. Summer storms like we have had recently can result in branch and / or root damage to the tree.
Branch damage is obvious, the branches get ripped off the tree and flung to the ground or a left hanging, requiring you to prune or cut them off. Root damage may be less apparent. The tree may look fine, and the easiest way to check is to give the tree a shove. If it moves, the roots have been disturbed and need firming back into place. Usually a good stamp round the base of the tree by you should be enough. However of you are concerned the tree has started to lean or still seems unsteady, you may have to put a stake in to support it.
