As the temperatures soar this week is your garden summer ready?
It has been pretty dry all April so your garden is already dry. Time to start watering, particularly anything in pots or recently planted.
Top tips for watering
- Water when plants are in the shade, ideally once the sun has moved round so they will stay in the shade for the rest of the day. Like us, plants can get sun burn, wet leaves exposed to the sun will shrivel.
- Use water retaining granules. Available in garden centres and on line, use in pots and window baskets to maximise the effect of watering. Follow the packet instructions.
- Use plant saucers, to allow the pots to reabsorb water during the day. Make sure plants are not left standing in water as this may encourage root rot.
Top tips for water conservation
- Group plants in pots together so they can create their own micro climate, it makes watering easier too
- Install Water butts attached to your down pipes to collect rain water. Your local water company or council may have discounted water butts with kits to attach them to down pipes available
- Collect water from vegetable and cooking preparation to use on plants in the garden, you may also want to recycle washing and washing up water in the garden too, once its cooled
Other quick hacks to make your garden summer ready
- Trim grass overhanging flowerbeds. Even if you haven’t time to mow the lawn, neatening the edges makes your garden look tidy
- Remove seed heads and flowers from weeds. It stops them spreading and creating more work later.
- Clean patios and garden furniture; no time to jet wash, sweep up dust and dirt for a quick make over.
