Slowly, subtly there are signs the seasons are changing from winter to Spring. Here at Chopwell we can work longer days as the light increases, although it is still rather muddy underfoot!
What we notice as the seasons change
- Colour coming back into gardens with bulbs starting with snowdrops and aconite. Soon crocus, daffodils and all the spring bulbs will be in bloom.
- Colour and forms as winter flowering hellebores and shrubs burst into flower
- Sound as birds start to sing more, along with the movement as they fly from feeders to bird tables. On warmer and sunnier days they are starting to investigate bird boxes and other nesting sites.
The nature of our work starts to change too. As spring takes hold we try to minimise the amount of hedge cutting as we do not want to disturb nesting birds. We want to complete major reshaping work on live trees and shrubs before the sap starts to rise and the plant comes into leaf. Working on trees and shrubs whilst they are dormant in the late winter puts the plant under far less stress. This reduces the risk of bare patches where a plant has been pruned later in the summer.
Can you see the seasons changing in your garden?
Now is a great time to take some photos of your garden, so you can identify where you want to see late winter and early spring colour next year.
Many bulbs will need planting next autumn, so a visual record now will help you place them in the perfect site line from your windows.
If you are worried about too many bulbs in flowerbeds have you considered planting in your lawn to create a naturalistic drift of spring flowers? You can over plant bulbs with summer annuals to keep the colour coming
If you have a plan for your garden hedges, shrubs and trees, but no time to make it happen, give Chopwell a call. Our friendly professional team can advise and help you achieve your garden goals!
