Has your garden got the ‘September Blues?
It’s when the annual flowers are leggy, untidy or finished. The final blooms of roses are scattered across the bushes, and beautiful upright plants are bashed about by rain and wind. It’s easy to fall out of love with your garden at this time of year, the gorgeous midsummer colours are disappearing and when you do get a chance to relax in the garden it nags you with weeds and flopping plants.
Don’t be discouraged, it’s a phase as the seasons change from summer into autumn, and it is a great time to cast a critical look at your outside space and decide what you will want to change next year. As perennial plants die back it is a good time to move and divide them, allowing what you keep to get established before the cold weather sets in. Alternatively you can mark the plants you want to divide next spring.
If you are thinking of a creating a hedge or planting a tree, preparing the site now will be easier than mid-winter or early spring; the soil is warmer and the surrounding area drier. If you can prepare the ground now, it will allow the area to settle over the winter and be ready to receive the plants, particularly if you are planning to use bare rooted specimens.
