As the first named storms are approaching the UK it is time to start preparing your garden for winter storms.
Our priority when when our clients ask us to help them to get ready for winter are
- Are there any trees or branches that have the potential to damage the property?
- Are there any trees, branches or leaves that have potential to create a hazard?
- Are there any plants that need attention to survive the winter?
Potential property damage
Whilst we cannot anticipate everything, trees and branches close to a property, particularly if the wood is old or diseased are higher risk from breaking during winter storms. Chopwell can check and trim branches now to reduce risk. If the tree belongs to a neighbour, talk to them, and remember you have the right to cut back any overhanging branches. Do check with your council if you live in a conservation area or if the tree has a preservation order before acting.
Potential for hazards
As well as branches and trees that may be vulnerable to winter storms, leaves and twigs can create hazards too.
Gutters blocked by leaves can create damp and water leaks.
Leaves on paths and patios can create a slip hazard.
Leaves and branches can block storm drains and culverts, stopping water draining with potential for swampy areas or even flooding.

Plant Care
Most plants are entering a dormant phase that lasts over the winter, where they want their roots to be secure, their branches are tied in or trimmed to minimise wind rock as the winter storms rage and the ground to have reasonable drainage so they are not sitting in pools of water for long periods.
This means trimming back or tying in any long branches, making sure drainage is working then leaving well alone.
