Welcome back to our blog. In the previous blog we discussed selecting a new tree or shrub for your garden. Now we look at purchase and planting; helping it to have the best start to grow and thrive in your space.
Once you have decided what tree or shrub to order, there are many specialist nurseries to visit on line or person, and most will offer different sizes of species. When considering what to buy you may want to consider
- Your budget; usually the bigger the plant the larger the bill. A larger specimen will provide immediate impact but can take longer to establish, needing more care such as feeding and watering for a longer period
- Access to the site; if the new tree or shrub has to be transported through your house, down a passageway or through a gate, will it fit?
- When will it be delivered? Will your site be ready for the plant?
Plants ordered at this time of year will tend to be ‘bare rooted’ meaning they arrive wrapped in sacking and need planting very soon. If your final planting place is not ready, you should heel in the plant; get the roots into the soil in a temporary position so they do not dry out.
