Are you considering a summer feature for your garden? Many trees or hedges are at their best at this time of year, and will provide interest though all the seasons. If your summer feature is to be a hedge or tree Chopwell recommends you wait to autumn or winter to plant, so that the plants can get established to grow away next spring. Use this summer to find out what you could plant that will suit your particular soil and light conditions. Ask yourself these 3 questions to get the right plant for your garden
- How much space do you have for your plants?
All plants grow, some more than others, if you buy a fast, vigorous plant for a small space you are creating work for yourself, as you will be chopping and pruning it regularly.
- What is your local garden centre stocking?
Garden centres are a great source of inspiration, their stock changes regularly, as they showcase the plants that are at their best each month of the year. If you know when you want your feature hedge or tree to be at its best, visit your garden centre then.
- What do your neighbours grow?
They will have similar soil and light conditions and what flourishes with them is likely to do the same with you. Look for different varieties or plants in the same family and they are likely to do well in your garden.
If you cannot wait to plant your summer feature tree or hedge, be prepared to nurture your plants for the next 3-4 months. This will include watering, at least daily and twice a day in hot spells, every day including summer holidays. The plants will also require regular feeding and mulching. In our experience, patience is rewarded, waiting until autumn to plant will result in better, stronger, sturdier plants without all the effort.
