Evergreen trees

Managing evergreens

An evergreen tree or shrub in your garden gives colour all year round. However, some are easier to manage than others.

Recently we were called to a customer near Warwick who had tried to prune back some overgrown pencil Juniper trees. Usually these grow straight, tall and narrow like an arrow pointing towards the sky. Whether the customer had been sold the wrong variety or these ones had not stayed true to type, they had been looking more like an upside down green ice-cream cone.

I say had, as the customer had taken the electric hedge trimmers to these plants to try to reduce their width. The result was brown patches all over the trees where in their enthusiasm they had cut into old wood. In many species of evergreens old wood will not regenerate and the patches will remain.

Unfortunately there was nothing I could do to help the trees recover and give the customer back the juniper trees they wanted. This customer will have to replant to get the look they are after. If only they had called Chopwell Trees before they started hacking. With careful professional pruning by Chopwell Trees they could have got the look they desired, saved their trees and saved themselves the cost and effort of replanting.

If you have a tree or shrub you want to control, give Chopwell a call first, we can save you making a costly mistake.
