Farmers are in the full swing of the harvest and if you can, keep picking and harvesting in your garden too. Flowers and edibles keep producing more for you if you keep cutting.
Picking Flowers
It is particularly important to keep removing any finished blooms on repeat flowering plants to encourage the plant to produce more. Cottage garden plants like dahlias, sweet peas and some roses will keep on flowering if you keep picking their blooms.
Other flowers just produce one bloom and once cut that is the end of the plant such as
- Sunflowers
- Roses that produce hips
- Plants grown from bulbs such as gladioli and lilies
Harvesting Vegetables
If you are growing any leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach or herbs like parsley, coriander and basil, the plants will keep producing if you keep picking. Leaving the leaves to grow will encourage the plant to create flowers and seeds, then die back with its work done. Similarly for beans. Keep picking them young and tasty and if you find some big tough pods, pick, then discard or save for seed, so the plant keeps producing.
Shrubs trees and hedges
The birds have finished nesting, so it is ‘safe’ to start pruning and trimming trees, hedges, and shrubs. As these structural plants are in full leaf it is easier to see where they are overshadowing other plants or becoming too big or out of shape. Tidying up your eye-catching larger plants immediately makes your garden look tidy and cared for.
