Its still very wet out there!
In many Warwickshire gardens if you tread on your grass you leave a muddy footprint. Whilst the soil is this saturated the best way to help it is by keeping off it.
In the last couple of blogs we have looked at how planting trees can help manage waterlogged soil and how the design of your garden can reduce the risk of flooding. Given the conditions we recommend you carry on planning your garden rather than starting to work in it.
If you are desperate to get into your garden, your aim with anything you do is to help the water drain away.
For those of you who want to work on your grass, try aerating it by spiking with a fork or specialist machine.
If you must tread on flowerbed, distribute your weight by standing on a plank of wood, and aerate the soil by putting a layer of well rotted compost on the soil and forking it in gently. Do be aware that waterlogged soil is much heavier than normal, so please be careful when digging.
In a normal winter, this time of year is ideal to plant bare rooted trees and hedges, but any plant will struggle in these wet conditions, so leave them heeled in for a couple of weeks in the hope that everything will start to dry out.
