Jobs for October: leaves, paths and grass

Its been a very dry September, so plants have kept flowering much longer than you may have expected, but now we are in October, it is time to wave the summer goodbye and get your garden ready for winter.

There are 3 things you can do to make a big difference to your garden

  1. Look after your lawn, as the dew gets heavier and the sun lower in the sky your lawn may not dry out enough to get a decent cut.   If you do manage to get your grass cut, make sure you rake up all the clippings, so all your lawn can benefit from the sun.  If any plants have grown over the edge of your flowerbeds and are drooping on the grass, cut them back or the grass below will die off.  If when you cut plants back you find bare patches, reseed and let the grass establish over the winter.
  2. Clean paths, patios and decks.  Dirt and leaves left on these areas will become mushy and slip hazard. Clean paths and sitting areas still look inviting, even once it becomes too cold to use them.
  3. Clear out summer bedding plants.  They have finished flowering and a pot of dead plants is so depressing.  If you can, replant with spring bulbs or winter flowers, if not put the pots out of sight for winter and start again in the spring
