January Pruning

Welcome to January 2019!

January is the ideal month to prune many trees and shrubs in your garden, in particular roses and fruit trees.  It is also a great time to shape and tidy any other deciduous bushes and trees as you can see their structure properly without leaves.

There are many articles and books on how to prune different species of trees and shrubs, and there is an art to pruning fruit trees to get the right shape whilst keeping the tree cropping fruit.  If you are not sure where to start, contact us at Chopwell, we can prune and tidy your garden for you.

In general, the aim of pruning is to tidy up a plant and to help it concentrate its energies into flowers and where appropriate fruit production.  Follow these simple tips to start getting your fruit trees and roses ready for 2019.

  • Firstly, make sure your secateurs, loppers and saws are sharp and clean to avoid transferring any diseases from plant to plant
  • Cut out any dead wood, easily spotted in roses by being brown rather than green stemmed and easily snapped off
  • Cut out any overlapping branches that touch others
  • Cut out any long leggy branches and twigs that are reaching for the sky
  • Cut branches and limbs to aim to get air and light into the centre of the plant

Before you start, if you have not done this before we recommend you take a look on the internet, there are many articles, images and short videos about pruning, usually by specific species, so you can see what you need to do for your exact plant.
