Finally it’s May, the ground is starting to dry out, flowers are blooming and trees are in leaf. Warmer weather makes it fun to spend time outside so here are some easy tips to make your garden look the best for minimum effort!
No Mow May
Yes the grass is growing, but to help bees insects and pollinators try not mowing this month. If you cannot bear to look at untidy grass everywhere, keep flower bed edges trimmed and consider keeping a patch un-mown for the month.
Weed management
You may feel overwhelmed by weeds, and whilst we would like to try to remove them, it is more important to stop them spreading. When a weed flowers, try to remove flower heads before it fades and turns to seed. If you get into your garden most days, just pinch out or pull off the weed flower heads as you see them and dispose in your green bin.
Pots and containers
It’s May when these plants really get going. Help them by watering and feeding regularly. Even when it rains, plants in pots rarely get enough water, so keep watering when the pots are in the shade.
Ponds
If you have a pond, it might be turning green with algae and and weed, remove it regularly, leave what you remove at the side of the pond for 24 hours to allow anything living in the weed find its way back into the pond.
Home grown fruit and vegetables
If you grow your own, we are sure you are very busy planting potting on and preparing for a bumper harvest. Now is the time to start protecting your crops from birds and other predators , netting over salads and fruit will protect them from local birds
