New house and garden

Hard Landscaping choices

In this blog we don’t talk much about hard landscaping, probably because Chopwell are first and foremost tree surgeons.  We love to help you manage the living aspects of your garden.  However, we notice how hard landscaping completes your outside space.  It can transform your garden into the beautiful and versatile extension of your home, to bring your home outdoors and your garden into your home.

Hard landscaping can be the major investment of your garden, get it right and you have space for entertaining and relaxing that is beautiful and useful.

Some Hard Landscaping considerations

  • Size matters.  A small cramped patio is just that, not quite big enough for anything.  If space is at a premium, make sure your table fits with enough space to push back chairs without crashing into anything.  Will you want a lounger on the space too?  If so, make sure you can fit it all in
  • Proportion.  Whilst a patio size depends on what you want to use it for, paths can be any width, keep them in proportion to your garden, they don’t need to be as wide as your drive!
  • Levels.  Even in a sloping garden keep the patio one level, if you need steps or a ramp to accommodate a slope make sure they are visible and away from where you are planning to have your table and chairs.
  • Lines of sight.  We automatically look along paths and follow straight edges.  Where are your paths leading? Is there a focal point to draw the eye into other areas? What is the view from your patio table and sun lounger?
  • Materials.  The choice and cost is vast.  Have a budget and stick to it, remember to include the extra costs such as labour, skip and equipment hire.

Be inspired to transform your space, summer is full of ideas from nationally famous garden shows to local gardens open (see the Yellow book scheme).
