Hedges

Hands off Hedges!

As we g0 through March, keep your hands off your hedges.  The birds are beginning to nest, they may choose your hedge, so give them the space and privacy they deserve!

What is your hedge doing?

As Spring starts it is a good time to take a look at any hedges you have.

  • Are they the height and depth you want?
  • Are they dense enough?
  • Are they working in your garden design?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no!’; not the right height, not the right density, or interrupting and creating unwanted barriers, give Chopwell a call.  At your free initial consultation we can discuss options to make your hedges work for you.

Common hedge problems

Wrong height – too tall and over powering for your space.  An overgrown hedge can make your garden dark and depressing.  If you need height for privacy, do you need it the whole length of the hedge?  Could different heights at different parts increase light in your garden without impacting privacy?

Thick at the top, thin at the bottom – When a huge thins at the bottom it needs a hard prune to force the growing effort lower.  If you contact us now we can book you in for hedge trimming in later summer.  We will cut back the hedge and give you feeding advice to help regrowth from the base.

Too wide- depending on the type of hedge this can be a difficult problem to solve.  If it is an evergreen conifer hedge, it rarely regrows from brown stems so you may need to be patient and prune little and often to achieve the shape you want over a number of years.  Our team can advise your options.  A deciduous hedge is more forgiving and will cope with pruning into shape at the end of the growing season, in late summer or early autumn.

While you plan your future hedges enjoy watching and hearing the birds in your garden making the most of your space!
