Late spring and early summer is prime breeding time for birds and they need your hedge for food and shelter. If you have heard the dawn chorus or simply stood in a garden or park for a few minutes you will have been surrounded by birdsong. Different species nest at different heights so hedges are ideal for a number of British native birds. If at all possible leave your hedge alone for April and May to allow the birds to breed and raise their chicks to independence. If you want to encourage birds to your garden or outside space, make sure they have somewhere to drink, even an upturned plant saucer with a few cm of water is enough for most native species.
