The autumn colour has been lat its best during half term this year. We hope you have had a chance to enjoy the range of colours in your garden, local parks and countryside.
Autumn Colour for your garden
For spectacular leaves, both shapes and colours Acers are a firm favourite. There are many varieties, in general, the lacier the leaf, the more attention it will need from you. Research varieties both for eventual size and frost hardiness before purchasing. On line the RHS plant finder is a great resource.
If you prefer berries, there are many evergreens and deciduous options. Some of our favourites are
Pryacantha, evergreen, with bright red or orange berries in autumn and winter. This plant has very spiky thorns making it an ideal hedging plant.
Hawthorn, this native tree has plum coloured berries in autumn and good leaf colour
Rowan or Mountain ash comes a variety of sizes and berry colour, with good autumn leaf colour too.
Your choice will depend on many things as well as your preference of plant and variety
- the amount of space available, and the existing plants
- the aspect – where the sun strikes the garden and at what time of day
- how you use your garden, you may prefer to have any spiky plants towards the back of borders away from where they can catch clothing.
Do your research
The internet is a great place to research plants for your garden. We also recommend you look your locally. What grows well near by? In neighbours gardens, roadsides, parks and local countryside. Your local garden centre will have plants to suit the area and their staff are knowledgeable.
