Give your hedge a spring boost

Before and after Hedge TrimmingHello, it is lovely to welcome you back to our blog.  Recently we have been discussing pruning and staking trees and shrubs to encourage growth, and there is a third aspect needed at this time of year; feeding.  All plants and living things are only as good as the food they receive and for trees shrubs and particularly hedges it is easy to forget they need food too.  Although they have extensive root systems they are competing with other plants in the locality for food and may have obstructions in their way such as walls or paved areas.

Feed Your Hedges

Spring is the perfect time to feed your hedges, trees and shrubs as they start to wake up after winter and draw in nutrients from the soil.  At this time all gardens benefit from feeding, be it rotted manures, organic fertilisers or granules from the appropriate package depending on how you garden.  Different plants have different requirements to thrive and if you are unsure what and when to feed your tree, shrub or hedge, contact us for specific advice tailored for your local environment.

If you make your own compost, putting a layer on the soil round the base of your tree, shrub or hedge in the spring as a mulch will help warm the soil and keep the moisture in to boost spring growth.  It will also act as a barrier layer making it more difficult for weeds to grow and compete with your specimen plants.
