Earlier in the year we suggest you stake trees and shrubs to encourage further growth. Now you need to think about feeding as all plants and living things thrive on the quality of the food they receive and for trees and shrubs and particularly hedges it is easy to forget they need food too. The root system is extensive but you must remember that they are competing with other plants for food and may have obstructions in their way such as walls or paved areas.
Feed Your Hedges
The perfect time to feed your hedges, trees and shrubs as they start to wake up after winter and draw in nutrients from the soil is the spring. Gardens benefit from feeding and you can use rotted manures, organic fertilisers or granules from the appropriate package depending on how you prefer to garden. You should note that different plants have different requirements to thrive and if you are unsure what and when to feed your trees, shrubs or hedges, contact Chopwell Trees for specific advice tailored for the soil in your local area.
If you prefer to make your own compost, putting a layer on the soil around the base of your tree, shrub or hedge in the spring as a mulch will help to warm the soil and keep the moisture in to boost your plants spring growth. The mulch layer will also act as a barrier and make it more difficult for weeds to grow.
