What is your garden inspiration?
As I write this, it is Chelsea Flower show, the TV and social media are full of images of aspirational and themed gardens designed for a ‘wow factor’. They may be beautiful, but not always be practical or easily translated on a small budget to the average garden.
The flowers are perfect not a leaf out of place and for most of us a million miles away from the view we see when we look out of our windows.
There are other flower shows throughout the summer from RHS organised ones such as Chelsea to a local allotment or village society. Local shows can be good place to talk to growers, buy plants and get ideas. They also show what can be grown locally as not all plants suit all soils and environments.
National Garden Scheme
The National Garden Scheme or ‘yellow book’ is more garden inspiration. Local people open their garden for charity once or more a year under this scheme. You can see the plants in situ, growing in conditions like your own, see planting schemes, what is growing with what and decide if it is something you want to recreate in your garden. Usually the event includes tea, cake, and a plant stall so you can make an afternoon of it and buy the plants you need too.
Gardens open in this scheme range from small to large, old to new. We love to see how gardeners combine plants in schemes to make the most of spaces, mixing old and new plants together for amazing effects.
Other places for garden inspiration
Warwickshire is fortunate to have many gardens and public spaces with landscaping and planting that can inspire. We like the combination of seasonal and permanent planting found in most public parks and local stately homes have extensive gardens and parkland with a huge variety of plants and schemes that grow well in our Midlands climate.
