New house and garden

Is your garden ‘Beach ready’?

You may be counting down the days to being ‘Beach Ready’, preparing for  your holiday. Before you go spare a thought and perhaps an hour or two to get your garden ‘Beach ready’ too. As you leave your property for some days, perhaps a fortnight or even longer, how well will your garden cope being left ‘home alone’?

We tend to go on holiday just when our gardens need us most, to water pots and baskets, to deadhead flowers and to pick fruit and vegetables. With luck a neighbour or close friend will be able to keep an eye on your garden when you are away, and if you are growing vegetables or cutting flowers, you can ask them to harvest produce as thanks for their efforts.  You can always offer to look after their garden when they go away in return.

To help them and yourself you may wish to invest in an automatic watering system, simple to set up, the basic clockwork versions enable you to water specific plants and pots once or twice a day. If you are thinking of installing a system, do it a week or so before you go to allow you to make fine adjustments to watering duration and rate of flow.

Remember your garden, as you get ready to go. As a break from packing, give your grass a good mow, and trim the edges. If you are going away for longer, consider reducing the height of the blades so the grass gets cut shorter, a bit like having your hair cut before a holiday!

Once you have all these tasks covered you can go on holiday knowing your garden is cared for and will be still looking good when you return, relaxed and refreshed.

Whatever your holiday plans, here at Chopwell we wish you all very Happy Holidays!
