Look in any estate agents window or on property websites and the photos show the front of the house and its garden. Many buyers subconsciously link the state of the garden with the internal condition of the property, and believe a tidy garden means well maintained home. Follow these 5 easy tips to make your front garden the best advert for your home
- Tidy up, clean paths and drives. If you have or can borrow one, use a jet washer to blast dirt, moss and lichen off the slabs, paver’s and tarmac. Reset any slabs that a potential buyer may walk on and wobble
- Trim hedges and any shrubs or trees. A hedge or plants overhanging a drive will make it look smaller. Be sure you can park the advertised number of cars on the drive without scratched paintwork.
- Mow any grass, it may be a combination of grass and weed, but once cut will look tidy and neat
- Define edges, make sure grass and plants do not spill onto paths and drives. Front gardens are usually functional and trailing plants can be seen as slip hazards; save the ‘artistic’ plants that spill over for the back.
- Have hanging baskets and pots with seasonal colourful flowers; keep them well watered (dying plants are a real turn off). Many garden centres sell ready planted seasonal selections for an instant lift.
