February fill dyke, fill it black or fill it white
This old rhyme refers to the rain or snow we get in February and this year is running true to form. Rain and flooding followed by bitter cold, snow and ice. Now it has thawed again, the streams and ditches are full water mud and debris. We are forecast more rain and possibly snow to come before the end of the month.
If you have any responsibility for streams, ditches or drains they are easily blocked by leaves and mud; it is your responsibility to keep these channels clear. The debris swept along by the force of the water can create temporary dams and blockages causing localised flooding. At this time of year, Chopwell tends to get business trimming and tidying mature trees and shrubs. With the leaves off it is easier to see which branches need removing and where to prune and trim to make a good shape and healthy specimen. Pruning now allows the plant to recover and flourish as it comes into leaf in the next month.
Observant February
If you look, signs of spring are everywhere. Snowdrops and early primroses in bloom, daffodils getting ready to flower and later spring bulbs starting to show in the ground. Wildlife is also starting to prepare, there are more birds in the garden, they are starting to sing and get ready to build nests, mate and have a family.
