In your garden, April is a time for decisions. Now is the time to decide if the plans and ideas you had for your outside space during the dark days of winter are dreams or will become reality.
It is also when the weather makes decisions regarding plants and planting difficult!
Summer bedding and frost tender plants
These cannot be planted outside until the risk of frost has passed, the warm then cold days and nights in April makes it a challenge to know when to plant out and risk it. If you have taken decisions to plant out and there is a frost forecast, try putting a layer of horticultural fleece or bubble wrap round and over the plants to protect them. If they are in pots that can be moved, put by a house wall to give shelter or even bring into a garage or shed for the night.
Garden redesigns
If you made a plan to make changes to your garden, April is a great time to act on these decisions, but if it involves removing trees, big shrubs or hedges, please be wildlife aware. Birds and small animals are nesting and breeding, using the canopy and camouflage of these features. Here at Chopwell we try not to disturb wildlife during the breeding season.
Environmentally friendly
If your garden decisions include being ‘greener’ now is a good time to install water-butts, there should be enough rain to fill them ready for the summer and if you want to disguise them with plants, any planted now or in the next weeks will grow to make your living wall or screen. The RSPB recently reported that bird feeders can enable disease, so help your birds by planting a wide variety of plants and flowers to encourage insects for them.
