As usual the March Weather is unpredictable, ranging from sunny and warm to sleet showers and strong winds. For gardeners March weather is always a challenge. When to plant, when to mow when to dig. Here at Chopwell we find March weather challenging too!
Weeds start growing.
If you can get into the garden the hoe is a really useful tool at this time to loosen weeds around permanent planting and any bare areas of soil waiting to be planted. Cutting weeds off at the base, doesn’t necessarily get rid of them but it does weaken and slow them down. This makes the weeds easier for you to remove before they flower and spread more seeds.
The Spring bulbs keep flowering.
Whatever weather March throws at us the spring bulbs still keep looking lovely. Snowdrops are over, now is the time to lift, divide and replant clumps for more flowers next year. Crocus are doing well and the first daffodils are out. Taller later bulbs like crown Imperial are coming up and you may want to use stakes and string to keep them growing straight, they can ben knocked sideways, literally, in strong winds. Standard daffodils in exposed places might benefit from staking too.
Biennial plants will soon be showing.
Plants that die back in autumn and return in spring are getting ready to start, if you know where they are in the garden, and they grow tall, try and get some frameworks in place for them to grow through. It is much easier now as you don’t risk damaging the plants. Traditionally, gardeners used longer twigs from pruning trees and bushes to make frameworks. Bamboo and metal supports are great too. If they are in place by the end of March the plants will soon grow through and cover up any unsightly sticks.
