Berries Spectacular!

Berries are everywhere this year in huge numbers. They are enhancing our trees and shrubs making a superb early autumn display.

According to the experts the weather this year has made for almost perfect conditions for a large crop of berries.  Remember back to spring, it was dry and warm so the bees and other pollinators were active when the plants flowered, then the warm wet summer meant fruit developed well, the damp conditions helping to swell the berries.

The wet and dreary summer has encouraged trees and shrubs to start autumn early too, with many leaves already turning from green to golds, russets and browns.  The autumn colouring sets off the vibrant berries making a beautiful eye-catching display in gardens and public spaces.

The wealth of berries encourages wildlife, particularly birds, so expect to see more than usual as they feed on the abundant supply of berries.  This is good news for garden favourites such as blackbirds and thrushes who eat berries as a main food source.

If you are keen to attract birds into your garden, you can set up feeding and watering stations, as well as planting trees and shrubs that produce berries.  Many plants that have ornamental berries can serve a dual purpose such as

  • Pyracantha – spectacular yellow, red or orange berries on a prickly evergreen plant, making it ideal for hedging and boundaries
  • Holly – traditional red or less common yellow berries on the glossy evergreen or variegated forms
  • Skimmia-Japonica – another evergreen, smooth leaved, with red berries and pretty blossom in the spring

And, of course, there are the edible berries and fruits suitable for the garden including

  • Raspberries, tayberries, cultivated blackberries
  • Damsons and plums
  • Apples and pears (on dwarf rootstock)
