Autumn is one of the best times for planting. The warm ground and wetter weather help the plant get established before winter. Now is also a good time to see where to plant, with everything else at full size it is easier to see what spaces are available or what has to come out to make room for the new plant.
When considering planting a tree or hedge, you may want to use this time to prepare the ground ready to plant bare-root or root-balled specimens in the dormant period of winter. Bare rooted trees and hedges are much cheaper than the container grown ones available at the moment.

Now is also the right time to plant spring bulbs. They are on sale everywhere including the supermarket, but for different forms or colours and a wider selection try your local garden centre or an online supplier. Bulbs can be planted in the ground, remember to mark where they are so you don’t disturb them by mistake during the winter, or in pots for a lovely spring display.
Many vegetables, can be sown in the autumn too. These include peas, broad beans, onions and garlic. Cover with a fleece to protect during the winter and next spring you’ll be enjoying some tasty home-grown vegetables. There are also some salad crops that will grow now giving you fresh leaves for the next few months. Check the varieties for specific advice on planting and harvesting.
