Autumn is coming!

After the extreme heat and drought of the summer it is lovely to know Autumn is coming.  The recent cooler and damper weather has perked up our gardens and outside spaces.

The grass is turning from brown to green and starting to grow again. It is tempting to cut the grass short, but as it is near the end of the growing season, we recommend you keep it a little longer.  This will help the grass grow strongly next year.  Other plants are flowering and fruiting well.  It is noticeable that flowers are smaller, and late summer fruits are abundant.

Autumn Foraging

If you are a forager, the blackberries are ripe as are wild plums and damsons.  All these are easy to spot and safe to pick.  We are also noticing autumn fungi; some may be edible mushrooms some may not.  We are not experts in identification of edible fungi, so we tend to observe and leave!

If you have a tree in your garden with fungi growing near the roots, please contact us to get it checked out.  This can be a symptom of honey fungus or other diseases attacking your plant.  Fungi like these can kill trees, early identification and treatment can slow or stop this.

Autumn planting

Autumn can be a good time to plant, think spring bulbs and hyacinths to grow to flower at Christmas.  It can also be a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The soil is warm from summer and the plant can get established over the winter months to be ready to grow and develop in the spring.

Some vegetables, such as onions, garlic, peas, and broad beans can be sown now for cropping next spring and summer.
