After the storm, the clear up.
Luckily here in Warwickshire we did not experience major flooding in the last storm, but it stripped leaves from plants and filled drains with debris.
With more storms likely during the winter, follow our simple tips to minimise the impact of storms to your garden.
- Clear drains and gullies. If you have any drainage channels in your garden make sure they are clear of leaves and debris.
- Clear leaves from your lawn. Leaves left on the grass may affect how it grows next year. Try to rake up leaves and make leaf mould. However, if it is very wet underfoot and where you tread turns to mud, wait for a few dry days so the ground firms up. You will reduce the risk of you slipping, and reduce the impact of you walking on your grass.
- Rake excess leaves from your flower beds. If you have a tree or deciduous shrub that has created a thick carpet of leaves over your flower bed, try to remove most of them. A light covering of leaves will help insulate and enrich the soil, a heavy blanket can kill what is beneath.
- Brush leaves, moss and debris from paths. These create a slip hazard. If your path is in shadow beware of ice.
- Tie in plants. Firm the base of them as they may have been rocked by the wind. You may not wish to prune yet, but if your plant has long stems that could be caught by wind you may wish to trim them back now.
Tidy up plants
After the storm and cold snap many plants are looking at their worst. Summer bedding has shrivelled and needs removing, other plants may benefit from cutting back.
