August continues the rollercoaster of weather we have experienced in the UK. From floods and storms to heat waves we have seen it all and it has affected us and our gardens.
The combination of heat and rain in July and August has meant everything has grown really well, including the weeds, making many gardens resemble a small jungle. The storms have bought down branches and battered tall flowers leaving a tangled mess in the flowerbeds.
Follow these easy tips to get your garden back in control
- Pick up any branches and leaves that have fallen. It makes the garden look tidy and helps the plants underneath thrive.
- Cut back flowers and plants that have been battered. For most plants if they have been bashed about, cutting back now will result in new growth and more flowers in September
- Mow the lawn, if the grass is really long, set the blades higher to help the machine cut and collect effectively
- Keep cutting blooms and dead heading to encourage more flowers
- Stake shrubs and trees to help them grow straight.
- Make sure the bases of plants are firmly in the soil and if needed, firm round and add compost. The winds can rock the plants loosening their roots and making them more susceptible to damage
- Remove or take the flowers and seed heads off weeds. There is an old saying; “one year’s seeds, seven years weeds”
