2018 is a hot summer. Probably the hottest and driest since 1976 and everywhere is looking parched. But don’t despair, your garden and its plants are more resilient than we may expect. Follow these top tips to help your garden survive the drought.
- If the plant is established in the ground, it has been there more than 12 months, don’t water. It will be pushing roots down to find moisture, watering occasionally will confuse the plant and encourage surface roots that are easily scorched
- Mulch the soil at the base of a plant, this will help keep the soil cooler, retain any moisture and discourage weeds. Use compost, straw or grass clippings, if you have any
- Ignore your lawn. Like everywhere else your lawn is probably parched and turning brown. Don’t cut it, just leave it. Once we do start to get rain it will recover
- Support plants, the occasional cooling breezes are very welcome to us but can damage plants. Make sure flower spikes and tree boughs are protected from wind damage and breakage by using appropriate supports
- Keep weeding. It may be hot and dry out there, but the weeds are still growing, flowering and spreading seed. Try to get the weeds out before they go to seed and sow a problem for next year.
- For plants in pots, water regularly and stand the pot on a saucer, so the plant can take up the excess water as it needs it
- When you water pots or garden plants do it when they are in shade and if possible in the evening, so they have the cooler night to absorb the moisture.
