The blooms in gardens are fantastic. The cold spring has given plants and extra oomph to produce some of the best blooms we have seen for many years.
Follow these tips to keep the blooms coming and the plants thriving
- Deadhead flowers. If you have roses and other repeat flowering shrubs, regular deadheading will encourage more blooms and keep your plants looking trim and cared for. It will also encourage the plant to make more flower buds to look pretty in a few weeks’ time.
- Keep watering plants in pots. June has been very dry so far and although we have had a few spots of rain, anything in a pot needs watering at least daily
- Feed blooming and fruiting plants regularly. It is hard work producing beautiful flowers, so show your plants you care, with a liquid plant food*
- Stake tall plants, string and canes or metal plant supports stop them drooping and flower heads snapping
- Tie in climbing plants, to stop blooms snapping when there are breezes
*Tomato fertilizer is very good for flowering plants, follow the instructions on the package. If you want to make your own liquid fertiliser, use comfrey and/ or nettles. Chop the stalks and leaves and put into a container, weighting them down to extract all the moisture. After a couple of weeks’ the resulting liquid is very smelly, and a great liquid feed, use diluted 1:20 when watering. Alternatively, if you have a water-butt, put the leaves and stalks directly in there. Some people prefer to put the leaves in a hessian sack in the water-butt so the residue doesn’t interfere with the tap and it can be more easily removed. This method creates a water-butt full of ready diluted plant food.
