February is usually classed as the last month of winter, but the welcome signs of spring are starting to appear.
- The days are getting longer, we are almost ½ way to the vernal equinox (when day and night are equal length) and we are gaining between 2 and 3 minutes extra light each day
- Bulbs are showing, snowdrops and hellebores are flowering
- Birds are singing and some are beginning to nest
- Some shrubs and trees are in flower
- Spring flowering trees and shrubs, such as camellia are covered in buds
Here at Chopwell we find it so heartening to see these signs of spring. If your garden looks like it is still in the depths of winter, these five tips will help you discover spring
- If you have hellebores, cut back the old leaves to expose the new buds, they are hardy and will survive snow and frost without protection
- If you don’t have any snowdrops, buy ones in pots that are flowering or ask neighbours if they will split clumps. It is best to plant snowdrops as or just after they flower
- If you have space plant a shrub with winter interest, all available at good garden centres at present, such as
- Vibernum bodnantense
- Witch-hazel (hamamelis)
- Skimmia
- Feed the birds, then they will come into your garden and sing for you.
- Rather than cut daffodils in a vase, have some growing in pots in your house, then you can plant them out later in the spring. This time next year they will be growing and getting ready to flower in your garden.
