Type of Hedge
The Common Hawthorn is a small, rounded deciduous tree with glossy, deeply lobed leaves and flat sprays of cream flowers, followed by dark red berries in autumn. After 10 years it can grow to a maximum height of 4 to 8 meters with a maximum spread of 4 to 8 meters.

It can grow in either exposed or sheltered areas.

The Common Hawthorn requires little or no pruning and in fact may be spoilt by harder pruning.

Pests that are prone to the hedge include caterpillars, gall mites and aphids. Diseases that it may be affected by include leaf spot and fireblight. One issue with Hawthorn is that it does set seed, so watch out for new plants elsewhere in the garden.
