With spring coming earlier and earlier due to climate issues, the end of January is becoming the cut off (get it?) point for trimming hedges and trees. At Chopwell Trees we really don’t like to disturb these habitats once birds start nesting and increasingly they are starting to by the start of February.
In the average garden, we plant trees, hedges and big shrubs to give focus and height, but they need controlling otherwise they take over and dominate, shading other plants and becoming a nuisance to you and your neighbours.
All plants grow towards the light and hedges in particular can become very leggy, thin at the bottom and thick at the top, which is probably the opposite of what you want, unless they are managed by regular trimming.
If your hedge has started thinning or has a see through base, it is not too late for it to be rescued. It may take a year or more to achieve the look you want, and you may have to be more drastic than you hoped but at Chopwell Trees we can advise you how to recover your hedge, as well as complete the task for you.
