Happy 2015 to you all! I hope you finished 2014 well, and you are all ready for 2015.
January is often called the ‘dark month’, and I think this applies to gardens and outside spaces in particular. It is a real effort to get out there and actually there is not much you can do in a garden at this time of year, when the ground is this saturated apart from pruning and cutting, but walking in a sodden garden risks soil compaction, creating future problems for you.
One thing you can do is look at your garden from inside, through your windows; does it bring a smile to your face when you do?
Is that smile from what you see, from what you remember or what you hope?
If it is from what you remember or what you hope, January is the right time to plan.
- What do you need to change to make hopes into reality?
- What can you change to make you smile at what you see now?
- How can you add interest through having plants and structures of differing heights so every glimpse enhances your mood?
For many their gardens become almost 2 dimensional in the winter, plants cut back to ground level that look almost dead and nothing to look at apart from your boundaries above 1metre.
It can be different; winter is when evergreens come into their own, providing green focal points in a grey landscape. There are also plants that flower through the winter, providing points of colour in a dull view.
