Originally Christmas trees were outdoor living specimens, decorated for Christmas, it is only relatively recently we have had the space and desire to have an indoor tree.
If you have a tree, large shrub or hedge in your garden, you could decide to decorate it for Christmas. If you do, here are some handy hints to help you create the look you desire.
Hint 1 – Lights. Make sure you choose lights for outdoor use. All the packs will say if they can be used outside. Choose a string with a long enough cable to reach from the tree or hedge to your power source. Electricity and water don’t mix, so don’t try to use extension cables, unless suitable for outside use with plastic or rubberized protectors. If in doubt contact an electrician for advice. Alternatively try solar powered lights; if the panel is angled correctly, out of shadows, it should get enough power for your lights to glow. Do not use unprotected candles or naked flame; candles in jam jars, hanging from branches look lovely if you are prepared to light them each night, but not so effective when it rains or snows.
Hint 2 – Decorations. Most tree decorations are designed for indoor use, there may be some tinsels that will cope outdoors, but remember to secure any decorations to the plant, as breezes, wind, heavy rain or snow may dislodge them.
Hint 3 – Feed the birds. Instead of tinsel and baubles, why not hang your tree or hedge with decorative edible treats for the birds. There are many available and you can make your own. This will give colour and interest during the day as the birds come to feed, and you may be surprised how many species visit your garden. There are lots of tips and hints on what types of bird feed attract different species. The birds will also help you with pest control as they feed on insects and bugs in your garden. If you do put out bird treats remember to have a birdbath or shallow bowl of water for them to drink from too.
