With almost all the leaves gone from the trees and the days drawing in, it is a perfect time to grab the camera and take artistic shots of sunrise or sunset through bare branches. On a crisp day it is possible to take shots like a pro without having to get up too early.

Many trees and shrubs have a surprisingly untidy, dense habit, branches growing in all directions from all parts of the plant. These are great if you want a plant that provides a solid barrier in your garden. However if you are after more of a screen or ‘lace curtain’ effect that provides glimpses through to another area, then plants with a more open, lax structure will work better for you.
For example: It is almost impossible to see through the branches and leaves of a mature conifer, whereas a mature willow still allows a dappled light through its branches. One way to check the growth habit of a tree or shrub is to have a look at the shadows cast by these plants, is the shadow a solid dark block or a patchwork of lighter and darker shade?
