Feeling the heat!

We are enjoying a warm summer, but are your trees and hedges?  Like us they need more water during hot weather, to keep healthy and lush.  Unlike us they cannot just turn on the tap and pour a glass of water, they rely on rain and on us noticing and remembering to water.

If your trees and hedges are well established, more than 3 years in the ground, they should be able to cope with the current summer heat.  In fact some experts say that watering established trees and hedges is counterproductive, the roots should be pushing down into the lower layers of soil to find water, and if you start watering those roots will head back up to ground level, which makes the plant far more susceptible to drought and disease.

Protecting your young hedge or tree in the Summer heat.

But, if you have created your hedge or planted your tree in the last couple of years, it may not have established the deep roots that will find water in a hot summer, so a little help from you in an occasional water and feed will have great benefit.

If you do decide to water, do so when the plant is in shade, usually early morning or late evening, then the water can soak in rather than evaporate.  Water at the base of the plant, and try not to splash the leaves.  Water on leaves is similar to oil on us, once the sun shines, it can burn.
