Moving home is an exciting time. Once in, the reality of where you are and what needs doing may hit you like a sledgehammer. Initially your priority may be the house, but the garden is also calling. I frequently get asked for advice by new home owners, and here are my top tips
- WAIT; do nothing major for a while. You may have plans to create seating areas, flowerbeds, veg patch, install a green house or children’s play equipment, but wait. Learn where the sunny and shady parts of the garden are. Which parts are dry? Which boggy? How does the land drain? Find out where the sun shines in the garden; it will differ by time of day and time of year. If you are considering ‘hard landscaping’ patio, decking or similar, I recommend you wait at least 6 months, and preferably a year to be sure you know how the sun will strike that area
- Use temporary and moveable structures, so you can try them in different parts of the garden to see how they grow and look. If your children want play equipment, delay installing anything that needs concreting in, most trampolines, paddling pools and goal posts can be moved. Plants in pots allow you to see how they grow and look in an area and can be moved.
- Mow your grass; keeping your grass under control makes a garden feel loved. You may have plans to redesign it, but as outlined above, get to know your garden first
- Trim plants and hedges, keeping everywhere neat. Even if the garden is not exactly your taste a neat space is easier to live with while you decide exactly how to convert it to your ‘paradise garden’.
- Enjoy what you have. The garden may have secrets to share, seasonal plants that come to the fore months after you have moved in. Keep the garden simple for the moment so it becomes a place to relax after a hard time working on the inside of your new home.
